In winter and blizzard, Jingchu is in a hurry.

Since the first heavy snowfall on January 12, the temperature in Hubei Province has been below 0℃ for 20 consecutive days, and the temperature in the coldest area is almost MINUS 10℃, which has suffered the most serious freezing natural disaster in a hundred years. In the fierce snowstorm, the Jianghan Plain sounded a special alert: more than 20 million hectares of farmland, more than 20 million people, countless factories, houses and schools, the Beijing-Kowloon Railway and the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway linking China are in jeopardy … The disaster has affected the soldiers.

For three consecutive weeks, the combat duty room of the Hubei Military Region was brightly lit day and night. The party committees of provincial military regions often have trouble sleeping and eating, and nervous research countermeasures for high-speed operation are tightened. Yuan Shijun, commander of the provincial military region, and Shi Baohua, political commissar, urgently dispatched troops to lead 100,000 officers and soldiers and militia reservists to fight against the freezing disaster. The storm is heavy and the disaster is urgent. The wheels of the Hubei Military Region are rolling and camouflage is flowing. A war of defending Jingchu, where the army and the people joined forces to fight against God, started in an all-round way.

Breaking the ice and removing snow, 100 thousand officers and men struggled to protect the aorta

At 1: 30 am on January 26, Dongdaemun, Hubei.

Under the icy night sky, a violent storm and blizzard fiercely attacked the expressway from Huanggang to Jiujiang, Jiangxi. More than 1,500 cars were unable to drive because of the icy road surface, and a long dragon was winding in the ice and snow.

The snowstorm affected the soldiers. After receiving the call for help from the local Party committee and government, the officers and men of a pontoon brigade in Hubei Military Region urgently unsealed the vehicles and dispatched more than 6,000 people (times) to the scene to ease the traffic.

The wind and snow are pervasive and the wind is biting. The officers and men didn’t care about snowflakes and ice water splashing on their bodies wrapped in mud. They started ice-breaking and snow-removing competitions in battalions. After 12 hours of hard work, they finally shoveled out a 120-kilometer-long ice-free passage.

When the vehicle slowly passed through the east gate of Hubei, the drivers waved to the officers and men. "Thank you, the PLA, you have worked hard!"

Donate money and materials for the people in the disaster area

At the beginning of the new year, under the influence of La Nina phenomenon, a severe snowstorm that has not happened for many years has hit Hubei Province continuously. Just as people are still silent in the joy of "auspicious snow and good harvest", I didn’t expect that the snowfall intensity is getting bigger and bigger, and the continuous freezing time is getting longer and longer, which is rare in the past hundred years. The alarm of 10.23 million people in 17 cities, states and 102 counties (cities, districts) in the province has sounded. Disaster is an order. The Party Committee of Hubei Military Region held an emergency standing committee overnight, taking participating in local snow disaster resistance as the most urgent political task at present, and taking safeguarding the interests of the people as the top priority. It immediately studied and deployed the work of snow disaster resistance and helping the affected people, and promptly launched the Emergency Plan for Emergency Rescue and Disaster Relief and issued the Emergency Notice on Doing a Good Job in Snow Disaster Prevention and Emergency Rescue and Disaster Relief. Seventeen snow disaster resistance headquarters were established throughout the region, and more than 100,000 officers and men and militia reserve personnel were urgently mobilized to fight. As soon as the danger was over, the alarm sounded again. On January 27th, there was a general snowstorm in Yichang area, and the snow in the Three Gorges dam area was more than 20 centimeters. The Three Gorges transfer highway and the Wuhan-Yichang expressway were all closed, and a large number of ro-ro vehicles descending from Chongqing to all parts of the country via Yichang could not be evacuated after arriving at the port of the dam area, which seriously hindered the transportation of the Three Gorges ro-ro dam. "The Three Gorges dam area must not be blocked!" There were a backlog of 38 ro-ro trucks and nearly 2,000 long-distance trucks, and another 500 ro-ro trucks went down to the dam area on the same day. From the evening of the 29th, Yichang Military Division quickly organized more than 1,000 militia reservists to rush to the scene to evacuate the backlog of vehicles and boats. After consultation with China Three Gorges Corporation, Yangtze Three Gorges Navigation Administration and relevant ro-ro ship transportation companies, they urgently dispatched 20 tons of industrial salt to remove snow, opened the Jingjiang River-Yangjiazui-Yemingzhu (water-land-water) ro-ro transfer line in time, and opened a special highway in the Three Gorges dam area on the afternoon of the same day, allowing ro-ro vehicles to go down through the dam area. Until 15: 00 the next day, the Three Gorges Ship Lock opened a special gate for ro-ro ships for the first time and arranged four gates to be released to. The smoothness of the expressway did not make the leaders and organs of the Hubei Military Region feel a little relaxed. At the same time, the Beijing-Guangzhou railway trunk line was hit by continuous blizzard and freezing rain, and more than 29 flights in Hubei were delayed or cancelled, and dozens of passenger cars could not be started. Wuchang railway station, the transportation hub of the thoroughfare of nine provinces, and nearly 100 thousand returning passengers are stranded here. After hearing the news, the Hubei Military Region quickly organized officers and soldiers and militia reservists to go to airports and railway stations. Some of them distributed snow disaster prevention materials and maps of Wuhan to passing passengers, some carried luggage for pedestrians, some helped the police to maintain order, and some poured boiling water for passengers … However, at this time, Li Zaixiang, a migrant worker who returned from Guangzhou to Yichang, suddenly had abdominal pain and was about to give birth after being pregnant for more than 9 months. The officers and men of the "Mobile Service Team of the Provincial Military Region" in Wuchang Station immediately contacted the ambulance of Wuhan General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Region and rushed her to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Wuhan General Hospital for timely treatment. During this period, the scene order of Wuchang section of Beijing-Guangzhou Railway was effectively controlled. Up to now,100,000 officers and soldiers and militia reservists in the Hubei Military Region are guarding the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway and Hubei Power Grid, breaking ice and removing snow for more than 600 kilometers, diverting more than 4,000 vehicles and transferring more than 3,000 people trapped, striving to defend the smooth flow of the national "artery".

Fighting day and night, more than 100 students will forget their lives to help the people.

Late at night on January 23rd, the house of Xiong Zhi, a villager in Xiongfan Village, Dawu County, Hubei Province, collapsed due to a fire and a snowstorm. Yang Qingliang, Minister of Armed Forces of Dawu County, and Fang Liangcai, political commissar, who heard the news, led the militia rescue team to quickly set up a tent for his home and sent rice, cooking oil, quilts and other urgently needed daily necessities. Xiong Zhishu, who was rescued, excitedly shook the hand of the leader of the People’s Armed Forces Department and said: "Natural disasters are merciless, and I will never forget the kindness of the People’s Liberation Army!" Leading cadres are the vanguard, and the snowstorm field is the examination room. The Party Committee of Hubei Military Region issued the Emergency Notice on Doing a Good Job in Snow Disaster Prevention, Emergency Rescue and Disaster Relief, and at the same time issued the Instruction on Doing a Good Job in Political Work in Snow Disaster Resistance, which clearly stated that resisting snowstorm attacks should be regarded as the "touchstone" to test the style and quality of cadres in party member, and party committee leaders at all levels should take the lead in snow disaster resistance, give full play to party member’s exemplary role, and unite as one to protect people’s property safety. Facing the snowstorm, Yuan Shijun, commander of the provincial military region, and Shi Baohua, political commissar, took the lead in taking to the streets to shovel ice and snow. Standing Committee members of other party committees in the provincial military region also went to the disaster area to conduct on-site command day and night to help the affected people get out of danger. The leaders of the subordinate military divisions and the People’s Armed Forces Department actively kept in touch with the local party committees and governments, and appeared in the front line of resisting snowstorms at any time, and there were more than 100 touching scenes of giving up their lives to help the people. The thatched huts of more than 40 villagers in Tianzhi barren mountain area in Enshi, Hubei Province, which is more than 2,000 meters above sea level, were destroyed by the strong snowstorm. Knowing this danger,The leaders of Enshi Military Division immediately organized more than 5,000 officers and soldiers and militia reservists to go to the "Tianshan Road". They fought the gale and blizzard day and night in the thin air, helping more than 3000 villagers to move to safety. Some officers and men’s clothes were worn out. They grabbed a handful of snow to clean up the bloody wounds and went into battle again. They said humorously, a scar is a military medal. Known as the "Ghost Gate of Tianshan Mountain", the officers and men need to transport the masses down from the mountain with a direct drop of 600 meters, which is like climbing into the sky. Without further ado, yu zhang, Minister of People’s Armed Forces of Jianshi County, shouldered his elderly aunt Li and walked hard down the hill one step at a time. Li auntie, who was safely rescued, said with tears in her eyes: "Thank you for your loved ones!" In Jianghan Plain, a big granary in the south of the motherland, this sudden snowstorm made many people’s lives miserable. On the afternoon of January 26th, the tap water pipe in Chunlai Community, Shengli Street, Shashi District, Jingzhou City was frozen and cracked, and the domestic water supply of more than 300 households in the area was interrupted. Zhou Zubing, political commissar of the People’s Armed Forces Department of Shashi District, who was being infused in the hospital, heard the news. He ignored the cold and fever and hurriedly pulled out the needle and rushed to the scene. While commanding the militia emergency repair team of more than 130 people to carry out overnight repairs, he actively coordinated the fire department to dispatch fire engines to deliver water to residents. Against the biting cold, the emergency repair team replaced the water pipeline in time after more than six hours of emergency repair, which restored the residents’ lives to normal. At this time, Zhou Zhengwei, who didn’t even have time to have a bite of dinner, returned to the hospital for treatment. It’s not enough to fight against the wind and snow and fight against the weather.

Organize officers and soldiers to clear the snow on the road.

In the past few days, the lowest temperature in Wuhan has reached MINUS 5℃, which has been the most serious frozen natural disaster since 1954. Since 28th, Liangzi Island on the outskirts of the city has been completely frozen. The ice layer on the lake is about 6-15cm thick. Four routes for residents on the island have been cut off by ruthless ice and snow, and more than 3,000 residents on the island have been cut off from vegetables, rice and gas. If it continues, there may be a major disaster of casualties. "Break the ice and split the life channel!" When the People’s Armed Forces Department of Liangzihu District learned about the situation, it quickly formed more than 40 militiamen, party member, to set up an "ice-breaking commando". They took hammers and sticks and took three machine barges to start breaking the ice between Liangzidao and Ezhou Changling Wharf. "How thick is the ice?"

"The thickest place can stand a young man weighing about 70 kilograms!"

"The three machine barges are all equipped with 25 horsepower engines, but the machine barges touch the ice and can’t break the ice at all."

"Then knock a few holes in the ice on the bow, and then the engine barge will rush forward!"

Yan Tingyou, the head of the District People’s Armed Forces Department who led the team to break the ice, picked up a wooden stick with a thick bowl, a length of 3 meters and a weight of 15 kilograms on an icebreaker barge, and tried to break the ice on the lake, but when the stick was smashed, the ice did not move, and it was smashed several times before the ice broke a small hole. It’s hard to break the ice, and some comrades don’t want to stop when their hands are blistered. Some comrades’ jaws are cracked by wooden sticks, and their blood is flowing. After simply dressing with gauze, they continue to fight … The waterway from Liangzidao to Ezhou Changling Wharf is about 15 kilometers long, which usually takes only more than 30 minutes. The militia party member Commando struggled to break the ice for 5 hours, and it was not until 1: 50 pm that the "Life Channel" was finally opened. The residents on the island were all elated when they watched the ships safely transport rice, flour, vegetables, cooking oil, liquefied steam and other daily necessities to the island in batches. On January 25, when a bus from Wuhan to Xiantao went to the section of Ningbao Village of National Highway 318, the bus crashed into a pole and rushed into the Sijiu River on the side of the road because of the freezing weather. The cold river water immediately poured into the car, and the passengers full of cars abandoned their cars to escape. Zhou Yousheng, the company commander of Ningbao village soldier in Xiaorenjie Town, Caidian District, Wuhan City, who is eradicating ice and snow on the nearby roads, immediately called several militiamen and rushed to the scene for rescue. After helping dozens of passengers escape from the car successfully, the accident happened: a big truck rushed over and hit the rickety pole. The pole smashed forward, and more than 10 passengers stood under the pole. "Run, be careful of the pole!" Zhou Shanda roared and rushed up to push the passengers away. As a result,The passenger escaped smoothly, but he was unfortunately hit. That night, Zhou Youshan, who was injured in the fight against the snowstorm, was diagnosed as "brain death" by tongji hospital. The eyes of more than 100 officers and men of Wuhan Garrison and the rescued people who visited outside the intensive care unit were full of tears. They said: Zhou Youshan led more than 20 members of the militia emergency detachment to fight day and night, cleared more than 10 kilometers of road snow and rescued more than 100 people affected by the disaster. However, in the snowstorm, Zhou Youshan left the chance of life to others … Over the past few days, more than 100 distribution schools in the Hubei Military Region have fought in the front line to resist the snowstorm, built more than 3,000 living tents for the disaster-stricken areas, and rescued and resettled more than 17,000 people trapped. However, they have lived in the wind and slept, won the praise of the people with practical actions, and withstood the test of party spirit and style.

Blood is thicker than snow, and millions of materials are devoted to the disaster area to offer love.

"Affected by the snowstorm for several days, no one in Wuhan has come to donate blood for free for a week, and the blood bank has been in a comprehensive emergency!"

The officers and men enthusiastically volunteered to donate blood to the disaster area.

The news of blood shortage in blood stations touched the hearts of officers and men in the army. After learning the situation, a pontoon bridge brigade in the Hubei Military Region contacted the blood station and asked the blood collection vehicle to drive directly into the camp. On the morning of January 29th, the author saw at the scene that Yao Xuefeng, the battalion commander of No.1 Battalion, had donated 1000 ml of blood for four times in 1992, 1996, 2005 and 2006, took the lead in swinging his arm and donated 200 ml of blood for free again. The cold winter wind did not make the people feel a little cold. The 128 officers and men of the brigade donated 25,600 ml of blood for free, sending warmth to the resident people with their own blood. Blood is thicker than snow. In the fight against this snowstorm, which has never happened in 50 years, all levels of the Hubei Military Region carried forward the fine tradition of our army to support the government and love the people, and organized officers and soldiers and militia reserve personnel to carry out send warm and offer love activities. From generals to soldiers, from retirees to employees’ families, they all voluntarily joined the donation ranks and donated 3,000 pieces (sets) of cotton-padded clothes. Zhang Xueqi, the former political commissar of the provincial military region and veteran of the Eighth Route Army, donated 10 pieces of clothes and quilts and sent them to the donation station in the snow. In this regard, the responsible comrades of the Hubei Provincial Civil Affairs Department said excitedly: "The Hubei Military Region was the first to donate clothes and quilts after the snowstorm in our province, and they played an important role in resisting the snowstorm in the province!" Pay attention to the disaster area and offer love.
